Model 38 Airweight Bodyguard

Model 38 Airweight Bodyguard

The classic Model 38 and model 49 Bodyguard (and not the nonsensical plastic abomination S&W mislabeled “Bodyguard 38”)  offers the shooter the best of all snub designs. The classic Bodyguard’s design features a solid hammer shroud while still making accessible a tiny nub of the hammer. The integrated hammer shroud avoids several hammer spur snagging dangers and when rendered double action only (DAO) the exposed hammer nub gives the shooter the easiest and safest method for the high primer cylinder rotation check. The Bodyguard backstrap, though not as high as that found on the Centennial, offers a realistic high-on-the-backstrap grasp for practical recoil control. Because the Bodyguard features an open top hammer shroud design its critics like to bewail the possible danger of lint building up behind either the hammer spur and/or the space between the sides of the hammer shroud. For these shooters I recommend a daily dust bunny check followed by a vigorous puff of breath to alleviate any concerns.
